PLX will also present a paper at the event titled "Low-Power Efficiency in 10GBase-T Silicon," which describes how industry advances in chip technology have rapidly brought down per-port power consumption, making 10GBase-T not only attractive to the data center but now a vital purchasing consideration.
Chairing the Ethernet Chipsets and Components track (Wednesday, Feb 22, 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and presenting will be Ron Cates, PLX vice president of marketing for networking products, an expert with over 30 years of experience in the semiconductor industry and author of several published articles. In addition to leading the panel's technical discussion, Cates will explain how cable length dependent adaptive power dissipation, Wake-on-LAN, and Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE), among other key features, play an important role in today's designs that are leading to the fast ramp-up of 10GBase-T in the data center.
The Ethernet Technology Summit, held Feb. 21-22, brings together industry leaders focused on the latest advances of Ethernet, ranging from the fundamental chips that enable the widely used standard to the careful planning and implementation required in next-generation data centers and enterprise applications. Low power dissipation is crucial in today's data centers and PLX's TN8000 devices require only two watts for 10-meter distances over standard copper cabling. TeraPHY products automatically determine the length of a cable and only use the necessary power to reach that distance. If long reach is needed, the devices are capable of 10Gbps operation at distances in excess of 120 meters on standard Category 6A cabling.
Other key features include enhanced Energy Efficient Ethernet (eEEE) for both 10 Gigabit and Gigabit speeds -- a PLX-only implementation of the IEEE 802.3az standard that delivers special low-power idle modes. System designers requiring high-security networks will take advantage of TeraPHY's enhanced Media Access Control Security (MACSec) circuits with second-generation MACSec features that include options for either variable or fixed latency for network protection. Additional features include RXAUI and enhanced KR interfaces and Wake on LAN support. TN8000 devices use a 39.0625 MHz crystal, in addition to the 156.25 MHz oscillator, resulting in reduced bill-of-materials (BOM) cost.
