The Menu Labeling Campaign
(PRBuzz.com) April 30, 2012 -- Though people in the UK eat out more than ever before, restaurants do not provide nutrition information in clear, easy-to-use formats, at the point of ordering. People often get more calories, fat, and salt than they realise when they make their choices.
Researches has suggested that foods consumed away from home typically have more calories, fat and sodium than foods prepared in the home and frequent consumption of food away from home has also been linked to higher rates of overweight and obesity.
According to The Food Commission, “If you want to know what is in the foods on children’s menus at KFC, Burger King, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, or Subway – you will need to do some advance research on company websites, ask staff for leaflets, or scrutinize the small print on packaging or tray liners.”
The Menu Labeling Campaign wants calorie information per meal item, on menu boards of fast food chains in text at least as large as the item price. Moreover, the Government needs to develop methods for fast food chains to offer salt information on menu boards and to run a public health campaign to educate people about calories.
The U.S. labeling had been passed into law via the Health Care Reform bill in March 2011 while the U.K. labeling shift is voluntary. Moreover, in the UK, a review is currently being prepared to explore whether nutritional food labeling promotes healthier food purchasing behaviour from restaurants, food shops and vending machines.
