The share of the global tablet market commanded by Apple‘s (AAPL) iPad soared to 68% in the first quarter, up from 54.7% in the fourth quarter, according to new research from IDC.

Tablets that ran on Google‘s (GOOG) Android platform did not do as well. Amazon‘s (AMZN) Kindle Fire saw its share of the market shrink to 4% from 16.8%.

Total worldwide media tablet shipments reached 17.4 million units in the first quarter, a 38% decline from the fourth quarter and 1.2 million units below IDC’s projection, but still a 120% year-over-year jump.

According to the report, Apple shipped 11.8 million iPads during the quarter, down from 15.4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011. Samsung (005930KS) took advantage of Amazon’s weakness to regain the number two position in the tablet market. The Kindle now holds the number three spot, followed by Levono, and Barnes & Noble‘s (BKS) Nook is at number five.
