Kaplan University Announces Plans to Add Location in Augusta

Kaplan University, a leader in higher education innovation, today announced plans to open a third Maine location in Augusta, Maine, which will help meet the growing demands for adult learners and area employers.

The University made the announcement at the annual combined commencement ceremony for its current two campuses in the state--Kaplan University-South Portland and Kaplan University-Lewiston. Maine Governor Paul LePage was the commencement speaker and 365 students graduated.

The Augusta facility will be located at 14 Marketplace Drive. Scheduled to officially open in August 2012 with classes starting on September 19, the Augusta location will offer on-ground, hybrid, and online programs of study that mirror the wide array of associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs currently offered through the University. This includes degrees in Business Administration, Accounting, Paralegal Studies, Early Childhood Development, Criminal Justice, Medical Assisting and Nursing.

“Because Kaplan University has done its homework and specializes in some of Maine’s fastest-growing industries, its graduates are better prepared for the jobs of today,” said Governor LePage. “I commend Kaplan for recognizing the needs of our private sector and creating programs that will address our workforce needs. The Augusta campus will be located in the heart of Central Maine, and will provide new career opportunities to even more Mainers which will continue to fuel our economy.”

"We work closely with local employers to concentrate our programs in disciplines that prepare students for work in fields that reflect the employment needs of the community," said Kaplan University Maine President Christopher Quinn. “Today’s announcement underscores Kaplan University’s commitment to meet the growing needs of both adult learners and local employers. Our expansion comes at a critical time for Maine’s economic future as in-demand jobs increasingly will require post-secondary education. As the state’s population ages, it’s vitally important that working age adults in Maine have a college education to meet the growing demand.”

An innovator in meeting the specific needs of non-traditional students juggling school with other life priorities, Kaplan University will additionally provide students a myriad of services to help them succeed in school and their careers, including academic advising and career services.

Kaplan expects to invest several million dollars and initially hire approximately one-dozen new employees to support the campus. Today, Kaplan University has approximately 180 Maine-based employees, including faculty, at its existing campuses in South Portland and Lewiston.

Kaplan University offers classroom-based and online degree programs, including master’s, bachelor’s and associate degrees as well as professional certificates. University programs are designed to prepare students to work in high-demand fields, including business, criminal justice, education, information technology and nursing.
