University of California, Berkeley Announces 2012 Bergeron Scholars

The University of California, Berkeley, today announced the 2012 Bergeron Scholars. This year’s Scholars are the first women to benefit from the program funded by Sandra and Douglas Bergeron in Fall 2011. The University of California, Berkeley, today announced the 2012 Bergeron Scholars. This year’s Scholars are the first women to benefit from the program funded by Sandra and Douglas Bergeron in Fall 2011, to provide scholarships, program support and mentorships to five undergraduate women each year pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The Bergeron Scholars program, with $1.5 million in total funding, was initiated in 2006 at Georgia State University and has already benefitted 30 women, several of whom have graduated and begun exciting careers.

This year’s scholarship recipients are:

  • Annie Davis of Sacramento, CA, class of 2013. Ms. Davis is pursuing a degree in molecular environmental biology and aspires to be a health researcher in industry or government, studying how everyday exposures to chemicals could be affecting health.
  • Muska Fazilat of Irvine, CA, class of 2014. Ms. Fazilat is studying integrative biology. Inspired by her observations of the lack of medical resources in her native Afghanistan, Ms. Fazilat intends to become a medical doctor.
  • Chu Fang (Phoebe) Tseng, a native of Taiwan now residing in Daly City, CA, class of 2013. Ms. Tseng is pursuing a degree in public health with a concentration on infectious diseases so she can study biological mechanisms on a cellular level and apply that scientific knowledge in health care.
  • Sarah Tulga of Sacramento, CA, class of 2014. Ms. Tulga, is studying integrative biology and aspires to pursue a career in research on the evolution of bone tissues, and how the analysis of these tissues can be used to determine the function and evolution of adaptations.
  • Kaitlyn Weeber of Chico, CA, class of 2013. Ms. Weeber, is pursuing a degree in chemistry. Ms. Weeber aims to pursue advanced degree studies in chemistry with the goal of teaching or working in industry.

“We are very pleased by the caliber of the first Bergeron Scholars at UC Berkeley,” said Sandra Bergeron, chair of the committee tasked with the recruitment of successful female technology executives to mentor the students. “Doug and I are delighted that this program is providing financial assistance and professional mentoring to assist these fine young women in their pursuit of their eventual careers.”

Sandra Bergeron is one of the most highly regarded female technology leaders in Silicon Valley. She is a venture partner with Trident Capital, and a director of Qualys Inc., Sophos plc, and chairman of TraceSecurity, Inc. Douglas G. Bergeron has been CEO of VeriFone Systems, Inc. (NYSE: PAY) since 2001. VeriFone employs nearly 5,000 people in 120 countries.

“Each of the Bergeron Scholars named today has demonstrated great potential for leadership in their chosen fields,” said David Blinder, Associate Vice Chancellor for University Relations. “The combination of financial awards, extensive program support, and the one-on-one mentorship with a female business leader presents a unique opportunity for these five extremely talented young women.”
