Parks Canada is bringing a new element to the successful Learn to camp initiative by launching the new Learn to Camp Smartphone Application. This new App is designed to help first-time campers plan and enjoy a camping trip to Canada's national parks and national marine conservation areas by offering information on camping basics, what to pack, where to camp, easy recipes and real Parks Canada staff tips.
"I am pleased that Parks Canada, through the Learn to Camp initiative, will continue to provide exceptional opportunities for Canadians to experience their national treasured places," said the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada. "Along with the new Smartphone App, this initiative will allow all Canadians to gain the necessary skills in order to have an amazing experience near where they live and to instil in them the confidence to continue to find enjoyment in camping while connecting to the wonders of our treasured natural places."
"This great new App will help first time campers learn how to plan a camping trip, how to start a fire, how to set up a tent, and it can even help plan meals; then sit back and enjoy starry nights, breathtaking views, tons of activities and most importantly a chance to bond with your family around an open campfire." said Tamara Tarasoff, National Products Specialist - New Media and Exhibitions, Parks Canada.
This year 15 different national historic sites and national parks across Canada will be offering the Learn To Camp experience on June 16 and 17 and will be hosting families with young children and new Canadians living in urban centres to experience camping and other activities particular to each location.
Parks Canada and Mountain Equipment Co-op have teamed up to host over 100 participants per location. The events include overnight camping at a national park or national historic site, where participants take part in a variety of activities, including regular on-site programs, interpretive activities and workshops focused on planning and enjoying safe and memorable camping experiences.
Parks Canada works to ensure Canada's historic and natural heritage is protected and, through a network of 43 national parks, 167 national historic sites, and four national marine conservation areas, invites Canadians and people around the world to engage in personal moments of inspiring discovery at our treasured natural and historic places.
This new Smartphone App is now available for iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and Android and will soon be available for Blackberry smartphones and tablets, as well as on the Parks Canada web site at www.pc.gc.ca.
