Online Auto Insurance: Prevention Key to Thwarting Calif. Car Thefts

Los Angeles, CA, June 21, 2012 --( The latest figures on 2011 auto thefts from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) show that the number of vehicles being stolen is declining for another straight year but that the bulk of thefts still occur in California, stressing the value of theft prevention in the Golden State, which has had a long-running history with auto thefts, according to Online Auto Insurance (OAI).

The metropolitan area of Fresno, Calif., had the highest rate of auto thefts per 100,000 residents, according to the NICB, which also found that seven of the 10 metro areas with the highest auto-theft rates are located in California.

Those unlucky motorists who find their car stolen will undoubtedly have questions about auto insurance claims so they can cover their losses. And unfortunately for those who only bought liability coverage, they won't be reimbursed for their stolen auto. That's because comprehensive coverage is the only type that pays drivers back in instances of vehicular theft.

OAI recommends that any motorist residing in a metro area listed by the NICB consider buying comprehensive coverage along with their liability insurance policy.

Along with its latest auto theft report, the NICB included its “four-layered protection” approach as tips to prevent auto theft.

The layered approach begins with “common sense” measures that don’t cost a thing: lock your doors, close your windows, take your keys out of the ignition, and park in a well-lit area.

The next step is installation of the following visible or audible warning devices that include sound alarms, wheel and brake locks and steering-column collars.

The third protective layer is installation of immobilizing devices that include smart keys, kill switches and devices that disable the starter ignition.

The fourth layer is use of a tracking device. Such modern-day devices can include telematics technology that remotely monitors a vehicle’s location.

And right now is exactly the right time to start thinking about prevention, as July and August are when most vehicle thefts occur, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The NHTSA estimates that about half of all auto thefts are because of driver errors that include leaving keys or valuables inside the vehicle and letting the engine run while outside of the car.

California leads all other states in the U.S. with the most stolen vehicles, according to the NHTSA, followed by Florida, Texas, Illinois and Georgia.

If current trends hold, 2011 would mark the eighth consecutive year of less auto thefts nationwide, according to the NICB.
