An upbeat job openings report lifted the markets to a higher close with the Dow rising 51 points to 13,168. Nasdaq gained 25 points to 3015.
On the upside
Tenet Healthcare (NYSE: THC) reported higher second quarter earnings that surpassed analyst expectations as revenue rose.
Exterran Holdings (NYSE: EXH) will receive $442 million for assets in Venezuela that were nationalized.
Halozyme (Nasdaq: HALO) swung to a loss for the second quarter but the results were better than expected.
On the downside
The Federal Aviation Administration proposed up to $162.4 million in fines against American Airlines for safety violations. U.S. Airways (NYSE: LCC) is interested in merging with AMR. McDermott International (NYSE: MDR) reported lower second quarter earnings even as revenue rose.
Second quarter earnings slipped for FirstEnergy (NYSE: FE).
In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 2 to 1 on the NYSE and by more than 5 to 3 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks gained 6 points to 801.
