NEW YORK - Sept. 25, 2015 - PRLog -- The Randall’s Island Park Alliance (RIPA) announces its free public events for the fall season. The diversity and frequency of RIPA’s events are anticipated to result in attendance by a broad spectrum of New Yorkers. Signature events feature fishing, orienteering and a day of fall festivities.

The kick-off of the Alliance’s events begins with Get Hooked! on September 26 (11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.). Children (ages 2-18) will get to try their hand at catch-and-release fishing with help from our expert Natural Areas Crew members. “The estuaries that surround the Island are vast and filled with wildlife that are essential to the health of our environment,” said Chris Girgenti, RIPA Natural Areas Manager. “The Get Hooked event is a favorite event of ours because it not only gives us the opportunity to show participants, and especially children, the wildlife in our waters, but also allows us to show how important it is that we protect that wildlife.”

The Harvest Festival on October 3 (12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.), is a family-friendly event that features kite flying, pumpkin decorating, face painting, self-guided tours of the Urban Farm, live music by J.D. Patch and many more activities. “Our signature fall events have activities for all ages to enjoy. Randall’s Island really is a hidden gem in New York City and we hope that everyone will continue to come out and discover all that is available on the Island – whether it is for one of our events or for a casual walk in the park, ” said Aimee Boden, RIPA President.

The final fall event of the season will be The Great Randall’s Island Treasure Hunt on November 14 (12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.). Participants will learn to use a map and compass while they explore and unlock the secrets of the Island. This event is especially exciting as this is the first year in which an adult orienteering course will be offered in addition to the children’s course.

Additionally, free weekly tours throughout the fall feature different aspects of the Island. During the Wetlands Tour, participants will learn about the history that has shaped the natural areas and view up close some of the animals on the Island. The Garden Tour allows attendees the opportunity to enjoy a scenic stroll along the waterfront with a horticulture expert who will educate them about the native plants blooming in the Waterfront Gardens and Wildflower Meadows. The FLOW.15 Outdoor Art Exhibition Tour provides participants an opportunity to meet some of the artists and learn about each art installation. For the sports minded, there are Open Run Nights at Icahn Stadium – runners of all levels may use the IAAF-certified track.
