Jefferson Regional Medical Center, New York University Langone Medical Center Receive President's Awards for Excellence at 2008 Eclipsys Executive Forum

Eclipsys Corporation®, (NASDAQ:ECLP), The Outcomes Company®, today announced the winners of the 2008 Presidents Award, the highest honor Eclipsys bestows upon its clients to recognize their outstanding achievements in healthcare information technology and healthcare delivery. Jefferson Regional Medical Center (JRMC), Pine Bluff, AR, received the Community Healthcare Organization Award, and New York University Langone Medical Center, New York City, received the Academic Healthcare Organization Award.

JRMC and NYU Langone Medical Center received the awards at the 2008 Eclipsys Executive Forum, held recently in Naples, FL. With the award, Eclipsys will make a donation to a charity of choice on behalf of each organization.

JRMC Nets Significant Quality, Safety Improvements with Eclipsys Solutions

To support the medical centers second century of service, Jefferson Regional Medical Center uses Sunrise Clinical Manager as the foundation for its electronic medical record (EMR) strategy. With the goal of creating an integrated EMR for each patient, improving patient safety and enhancing the effectiveness of all its care teams, JRMC has routinely partnered with Eclipsys to become an early adopter of Eclipsys clinical information technology, beginning with its 2003 implementation and continuing with the latest versions of Clinical Managers advanced Sunrise Acute Care module.

Building upon its successes, the medical center has subsequently activated and/or planned to activate other integrated Clinical Manager modules to support an enterprise strategy of entering information once and having it available across the care continuum. This includes Sunrise Emergency Care, Sunrise Knowledge-Based Charting, Sunrise Medication Management and Sunrise Ambulatory Care. JRMC has documented improvements in care quality, patient safety, operational efficiency, compliance and revenue enhancement, including:

  • 97-percent compliance with Joint Commission national safety goals in 2007
  • A reduction of length of stay in both critical care and general inpatient venues through improved access to complete patient information for utilization review department and case managers
  • 96.3-percent improvement (in dollars) in charging, as well as reduced denials from Arkansas Medicaid through improved nursing documentation
  • Reduced Emergency Department total thru-put time to 2 hours and 34 minutes well below the national average
  • By enhancing documentation, JRMC has improved Medicaid quality measures, resulting in $500,000 in pay-for-performance incentives

After Big-Bang Activation, NYU Langone Medical Center Improves Medication Reconciliation, Satisfaction, Service

NYU Langone Medical Center, widely recognized as the first hospital in the world to achieve 100-percent adoption computerized physician order entry (CPOE) more than a quarter century ago, has continued to distinguish itself as a technology leader through its numerous successes with large-scale system implementation and downstream improvements in quality and operational performance.

Last year, in one of the largest big-bang system conversions in industry history, more than 5,000 users and 725 active inpatients were converted from a legacy system to Sunrise Clinical Manager in less than 36 hours, without disruption to operations, safety, quality and revenue. A highlight among the team's accomplishments was a successful unannounced Joint Commission survey within 48 hours of the system activation. As a result, a number of NYU implementation strategies have been adopted by other healthcare organizations as best practices.

Through constant observation and optimization of systems, NYU Langone Medical Center has realized numerous improvements in quality and operational performance, including:

  • A 30-percent increase in patient-satisfaction scores and a 43-percent improvement in left without being seen rates in its Emergency Department, through automated ED triage and tracking
  • Improvement in compliance rates by over 100 percent for enterprise-wide medication reconciliation, a Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goal
  • 80-percent reduction of unsigned physician orders within first year of system activation
  • Near-elimination of handwriting illegibility by achieving 80 percent utilization of electronic progress notes for acute care
  • 100-percent compliance with complex and exacting New York State reporting requirements for Neonatal Intensive Care through automated reporting linked to comprehensive electronic physician documentation

NYU Langone Medical Center also has increased physician adoption and usage through the implementation of a single-sign-on strategy and has developed a hybrid medical record, eliminating the needless printing and filing of clinical documents.
