ASMP’s Anderson Receives IPC Photographer Leadership Award

The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) has announced that Richard Anderson has received its 2009 International Photographic Council (IPC) Photographer Leadership Award, selected by the association as the member who best represents the group’s criteria and ideals. Anderson was one of five winners recognized at the IPC’s annual awards luncheon held at the United Nations in New York last week. Awards are presented each May, which is International Professional Photographer Month, by the IPC, a non-governmental organization (NGO) of the United Nations which promotes world peace through photography.

According to ASMP Executive Director Eugene Mopsik, “Richard has received this award in recognition of his volunteer work as an ASMP board member, for his contributions to the trade through his role in developing the Universal Photographic Digital Imaging Guidelines (UPDIG), for his efforts in securing a three year award from the Library of Congress to further his work on digital standards, and for his educational outreach to the photographic community.”

Anderson, an ASMP Board officer, is an advertising and corporate photographer based in Baltimore, Maryland. He chairs ASMP’s Digital Standards Committee, is principal author of the Universal Photographic Digital Imaging Guidelines, and works with ASMP and the Library of Congress on expanding and promoting best practices for digital image workflow and preservation. Anderson has a worldwide photographic clientele, he regularly presents seminars on digital workflow and quality, and he is the author of numerous magazine articles.

Photographer Leadership Award winners were selected by ASMP and four other professional photography organizations and included: Will Mosgrove, Advertising Photographers of America (APA); Jack Reznicki, Professional Photographers of America (PPA); Joe Mark, Professional School Photographers Association International (PSPA); and Mary Calvert, White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA).

Founded in 1944, ASMP is the leader in promoting photographers’ rights, providing education in better business practices, producing business publications for photographers, and helping to connect purchasers with professional photographers. ASMP has over 6,000 members and 39 chapters across the country and its members include many of the world’s foremost photographers.
