Rhode Island Hunting and Fishing Licenses Now Available Online

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is proud to announce the launch of a new licensing system that allows outdoor enthusiasts to obtain fishing and, for the first time ever in the state, hunting licenses online.

The new system, found at https://www.ri.gov/DEM/huntfish, was developed as a customer-centric solution geared towards giving customers streamlined, on-demand access to the licensing process. The system replaces paper-based license issuances and builds upon the current offering of online fishing licenses to include hunting licenses, permits, tags, and stamps. A customer’s first transaction through the new system establishes a Rhode Island Fishing and Hunting ID, or RIFHID (pronounced Rye-fid). This identifier is unique to each customer and can be used to quickly purchase additional licenses and permits, reprint lost or damaged license documents, and renew licenses in subsequent years. The system can be accessed 24/7, allowing customers to manage their accounts and add new permits and licenses from the comfort of home, on the go, or even out in the field.

Licenses are still available for purchase at DEM's Office of Boating Registration & Licenses in Providence, RI and participating sales agent locations across the state. The new online system provides agents with a unique interface they can use to look up customer information, add permits to a customer’s profile, and download reports of the agent’s sales.

"We're excited to offer this expanded online system as we work to make all of our great outdoor recreational activities more accessible than ever before," said DEM Director Janet Coit. "This launch means there's no more waiting for regular retail hours or a delay until a fishing or hunting license arrives by mail. I am proud of the work our team continues to do to support these treasured Rhode Island traditions and to expand opportunities for children and families to get outdoors, enjoy nature, and participate in healthy activities."

To date, nearly 32,480 licenses and more than 12,197 permits have been purchased since the system launched on March 1. Currently, resident and non-resident customers are able to purchase freshwater fishing, recreational saltwater fishing, hunting, and combination freshwater fishing and hunting licenses, as well as trout stamps and spring turkey permits. Additional licenses and permits, including deer, migratory bird, and small game permits, are scheduled to go on sale in the coming months.

The online Hunting and Fishing system was developed by DEM in conjunction with the state’s digital government services provider, Rhode Island Interactive (RII), at no cost to taxpayers. RII previously partnered with the DEM to issue the online freshwater fishing license, which has been active for more than 10 years, and the online and vendor based system to issue saltwater fishing licenses since 2010. This new system joins a popular suite of online services developed by RI Interactive currently available at https://www.RI.gov and the DEM website at www.dem.ri.gov.
