The grants are being provided to help Black entertainers, entrepreneurs and leaders protect their brands
February 20, 2022 —
In honor of Black History Month, celebrity trademark and business attorney Michelle J. Miller is joining with MC Lyte and celebrity financial coach & entertainment executive, Dr. Lynn Richardson, to offer trademark grants to two Black-owned businesses in February.
“We are three Black women who are joining together to help African-American business owners obtain a federal trademark with a trademark grant. Owning intellectual property has been a challenge for Black creatives, entertainers and entrepreneurs, so this grant will help people who need the financial assistance,” said Miller, owner of The Brillionaires Law Firm.
“Our mission is to help creatives, influencers, entrepreneurs, entertainers and leaders own their influential names, protect their brands and build generational wealth. These efforts include scholarships, educational assistance and partnerships with other agencies to magnify community impact,” Miller said.
The winning businesses will receive a grant of $1,000, which can be applied toward a United States Trademark Application or a trademark package from Miller, who noted that African-Americans make up less than two percent of the legal profession.
Miller recently obtained the trademark registration for iconic rapper, DJ, actress, producer and entrepreneur MC Lyte.
“It’s an honor to work with my sister MC Lyte and to help her obtain ownership of the legendary hip-hop name that millions of people know rightfully belongs to her,” Miller said.
Based in Chicago, Miller serves clients across the United States and around the world. Miller founded her firm to serve goal-getters because she is one. She obtained two law degrees as a single mom and has persistently pursued all of her goals, including being a woman of color who owns a law firm.
“When someone takes your income-generating ideas, it is not a compliment. You don’t have to accept someone stealing your business and intellectual property assets; you can obtain the legal right to stop thieves in their tracks. You are brilliant and you could be the owner of the next billion-dollar brand, so you need to protect your intellectual property,” Miller said. “I have watched people bankroll the brands of Black entertainers, entrepreneurs and creatives for decades. I'm on a mission to help people own their brilliance.”
Miller’s services include trademark searches and applications and monitoring, as well as trademark strategy in which she works with clients on their business goals and helps them map out a strategic plan to protect their businesses and brands.
