California’s Yes on Proposition 33 campaign team welcomed word that U.S. Vice President and Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris supports rent control. According to a Vox.com news article published earlier today, Harris recently pledged to “take on corporate landlords and cap unfair rent increases” while speaking to a crowd of 10,000 supporters in Atlanta.
“We applaud Vice President Harris's support of rent control. Here in her home state, voters have a golden opportunity to expand rent control by voting Yes on 33 this November,” said Susie Shannon, campaign director for the Yes on Proposition 33 campaign. “Kamala joins the California Democratic Party and over a hundred California elected officials in the movement for relief for renters. Her embrace of rent control definitely increases the momentum for Prop. 33.”
Vox.com also noted “Harris’s remarks to cap rents echoed a recent proposal from the Biden administration just two weeks earlier to limit rent hikes to 5 percent nationwide over the next two years for all landlords who own more than 50 units. (They estimate this would cover over 20 million units across the country.)”
Proposition 33, sponsored by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and endorsed by more than 100 elected and formerly elected officials in California, is just 23 words: "The state may not limit the right of any city, county, or city and county to maintain, enact or expand residential rent control.”
