Hurricane Forces Pioneer to Shut In Portion
of Gulf of Mexico Production

Dallas, Texas, September 13, 2004 — Pioneer Natural Resources Company (“Pioneer”) (NYSE:PXD) announced today that approximately 150 million cubic feet gas equivalent per day of its net production in the Gulf of Mexico has been or is expected to be shut in as a precaution related to the progress of Hurricane Ivan.

The Canyon Express gas gathering system and Canyon Station were shut in this morning. Production from Devils Tower is expected to be shut in later today, and completion activities at Devils Tower have been suspended. Production from the Pioneer-operated Falcon Corridor is not expected to be affected by the storm. Other Pioneer-operated offshore and inland bay production is expected to be shut in Tuesday morning.
