In the nearly 60 years since the first TKR surgery, medical science has advanced significantly, but the TWIS-TKR is the first technique known to use AI systems to assist with data collection and surgical planning. Through a partnership with MAI Motion, MSK Doctors now uses AI analysis to plan a custom rotational alignment for each client’s new knee.
The process uses a unique motion analysis step, where clients will be asked to move naturally through a series of ordinary activities. This data will be analyzed by a custom-built AI tool that will determine how each individual moves and the specific rotation of their knee joint.
With this information, the MSK Doctors surgical team can plan a custom surgical procedure that provides each client with enhanced mobility and stability for their new knee and a reduced risk of future complications. Research also suggests that clients with a TWIS-TKR knee often return to their normal daily activities faster, including walking and climbing stairs.
When asked about the new prosthetic, clients with a TWIS-TKR reported significant improvements in several key areas, such as overall quality of life, and suggested that the new technique provides a more natural feeling knee and normal-seeming movement. Clients also reported feeling less post-operative pain and discomfort and increased overall satisfaction.
Although the TWIS-TKR technique is still new, longitudinal studies suggest that it can also reduce the need for revision surgeries and the likelihood of complications. This is due in part to the increased stability of the new implant, which has been shown to reduce wear and tear over time.
