Simi Valley Inspire Therapy For Sleep Apnea: Implant CPAP Alternative Expanded

Southern California Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Medical Center (805-557-9930) expanded its Inspire upper airway stimulation treatment alternative to CPAP for patients with OSA in Simi Valley.

Patients in Simi Valley can now receive new FDA-approved and clinically proven Inspire treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) at The Southern California Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Medical Center (SCPSDMC).

Placed under the skin of the neck and chest during an outpatient procedure, the clinic’s new Inspire technology is designed for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP machine usage.

Considered the mainstay of OSA treatment, CPAP machines deliver oxygenated air into a patient’s airways through a mask and tube. However, as a PLOS One study revealed, there is a significant treatment burden associated with CPAP therapy. With a 34% treatment non-adherence rate, patients have reported discomfort, stigma, and negative relationship and financial impacts.

Controlled by a remote, the Inspire system utilizes nerve stimulation instead of pressurized air to keep the patient’s airways open and restore restful sleep. “In contrast to CPAP, Inspire works from inside the body with the patient’s natural breathing process. We’ve seen a higher level of patient satisfaction with Inspire and we’re excited to offer this therapy to patients who struggle with CPAP,” said an SCPSDMC spokesperson.

The clinic’s central Inspire system unit is implanted underneath the patient’s clavicle while a tunneled sensing lead is attached to the intercostal muscles. Lastly, a tunneled stimulation lead attaches to the hypoglossal nerve which controls tongue movement. When stimulated by the device, this nerve moves the patient’s tongue forward, stabilizing their throat muscles to keep their breathing passages open during sleep.

To determine their suitability for Inspire treatment, SCPSDMC’s patients undergo a physical examination of their airways. Patients can contact the clinic to book an assessment and to address other conditions such as snoring, restless limb syndrome, narcolepsy, excessive daytime sleepiness, and fatigue.

The Southern California Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Medical Center was founded in 1984 by Dr. Ronald Popper - a board-certified sleep medicine specialist, author, and speaker for the National Sleep Foundation. Based in Thousand Oaks, the center serves patients in Malibu, Conejo Valley, and San Fernando Valley, together with Simi Valley.

A satisfied patient said: “Dr. Popper is at the forefront of his field. He knows what he’s doing, and his vast knowledge of apnea has been a great service to myself and my health. The doctor also has the best bedside manner of any doctor that I have been to. The best.”
