Strong September retail sales lift markets

A strong 1.6% gain in September retail sales lifted the markets to a higher close with the Dow gaining 30 points to 22,871. Nasdaq rose 14 points to 6,605.

Sohu.com's (Nasdaq: SOHU) subsidiary Sogou has filed a registration statement for a proposed initial public offering.

Profit taking weighed down shares of Infinity Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: INFI).


Tandem Diabetes Care (Nasdaq: TNDM) priced its public offering of common stocks and warrants at a discount.

Applied Optoelectronics (Nasdaq: AAOI) warned that third quarter earnings and revenue would fall short of previous guidance.


In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 3 to 2 on the NYSE while decliners edged out advancers by nearly 9 to 8 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 added 2 points to 2,553. Bitcoin leaped $301 to $5,589.
