ANDREW ALBA – Older Than This
FROELICK GALLERY is proud to welcome back prolific, self-taught artist, Andrew Alba with his new exhibition of large oil paintings, wood sculptures and small works on paper. Blooming from the heartbreaking grounds of rubble and destruction, Older Than This is Andrew’s visual reflection on the horrific images and actions that he and many of us continue to witness from the safe distance of our news outlets and social media platforms.
As a descendant of Mexican migrant workers, Alba often communicates anti-establishment narratives of the working class. Through abstraction and neo-expressionism he evokes an emotional response while commenting on repeated histories, contemporary politics, society, family, and fatherhood. He creates work free from elite academic ideals, theoretical constraints or critical expectations.
Since his first solo show with Froelick Gallery back in the summer of 2023, Andrew’s career has not rested. He has since been featured at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art as part of the group show titled, A Greater Utah curated by Tiana Birrell, Peter Everett, Amy Jorgensen, Jessica Kinsey, Nancy Rivera, and Valentina Sireech. He debuted his first Sante Fe show, Lifted Labor with form & concept gallery, and recently had a solo show at the new Material Art Gallery in Salt Lake City, UT. We are so proud to represent and share Andrew Alba’s work with Portland and beyond.
EMMA GERIGSCOTT – Ruminators
FROELICK GALLERY artist Emma Gerigscott refers to herself as a ruminator and her artistic process as ruminations. In this new body of work, she reflects on her love for sweet moments of interaction between humans and curious creatures. Her daily stream of imagery includes lush expressionistic forms, color-blocked human figures, critters, limbs and all their many possible harmonious compositions. As a student of craft, Emma enjoys experimenting with paint on non-traditional surfaces. For this exhibition, her methods took to Tyvek wrap, aluminum sheets and plaster on foam. The works on Tyvek and plaster sculptures are painted with Flashe, a vinyl-based paint that leaves a dense, powder-like matte finish. The aluminum sheets are painted with oil, giving an interesting connection to the paint and metal. There are delicate peak-a-boos of aluminum shining through, almost a sparkle, where the oil paint intentionally didn’t quite cover. The works become a conversation between the tangible materials and Gerigscott’s imagination. The chosen forms and surfaces are essential to her playful and joyous stories, moments and ruminations.
Emma Gerigscott received her M.F.A. from the Oregon College of Art and Craft in 2018. Before moving to Portland, she studied at Goshen College in Goshen, IN where she was born and raised. Emma grew up riding horses and raising ducks and goats. She lives and works in Portland with her husband and dear old farm dog, Pi.
