New White Paper: Eliminate the Risk of Hydrogen Embrittlement

By: PRLog
When a critical fastener fails or a structural component fractures on a construction site, the culprit might be invisible: hydrogen embrittlement. This metallurgical time bomb, introduced during traditional electroplating, poses a threat to the backbone of manufacturing across the automotive, aerospace, construction, and energy sectors.

CHICAGO - Oct. 29, 2025 - PRLog -- MECHANICAL PLATING: The Smart Solution

The Hidden Danger in Traditional Plating

Electroplating forces hydrogen atoms into high-strength steel during the coating process. These microscopic intruders make metal brittle, creating components that can fail suddenly and catastrophically. Parts with hardness ratings above 32 HRC are especially vulnerable. Even post-plating baking procedures, designed to drive out hydrogen, cannot eliminate the risk completely. The consequences are real: recalls, injuries, lawsuits, and production delays.

Also called impact plating or peen plating, mechanical plating applies metallic coatings through a cold process that uses no electrical current and generates no heat. Without heat or electricity, there is no pathway for hydrogen to enter the steel substrate.

"With over fifty years of experience in metal finishing, we understand the challenges," said Tim Winard, President of Dyna-Burr Chicago. "Plus, we are increasing capacity, enhancing responsiveness, and positioning ourselves as the go-to supplier when manufacturers need quality mechanical plating without the wait."

Mechanical Plating Key Advantages:
  • NO hydrogen introduction - it's a cold, mechanical process
  • NO baking required - saves time and energy
  • Excellent corrosion resistance (comparable to hot-dip galvanizing)
  • Uniform coating thickness, even in threads and recesses
  • Environmentally friendly - no harmful fumes or wastewater
Standards: ASTM B695, SAE AMS2451
