Towering Crane Signals Next Construction Phase for New Intermountain St. Vincent Regional Hospital

Dramatic progress will be seen as the Intermountain St. Vincent Regional Hospital’s structural “spine” and steel framing take shape over the coming months.

(PRUnderground) November 15th, 2025

The Billings skyline will begin to change with the arrival of several impressive mobile crawler cranes at the new Intermountain Health St. Vincent Regional Hospital site.

The public can expect to see dramatic progress as the hospital’s structural “spine” and steel framing take shape over the coming months. During this next phase of construction, elevator shafts, known as “cores,” are assembled with pre-cast concrete panels, forming the structural backbone of the hospital.

Structural steel installation begins this month and will continue for the next 18 months, culminating in a celebratory “topping off” event anticipated in February 2027.

The Manitowoc 16000 crane, with a lifting capacity of 440 tons and a maximum height of 420 feet, will be instrumental in placing approximately 4,000 tons of steel for the project. Its final job will be assembling the fixed tower crane in February 2027.

The new Intermountain St. Vincent Regional Hospital is a “once-in-a-generation” investment in the health of the Billings community and region.

The 14-floor, 737,000 square-foot facility is being built at 27th Street and 12th Avenue North, just east of the current hospital. When completed in 2029, the new hospital will replace the current facility, with all existing services transferring to the new location.

“This is a transformational moment for our hospital and our community, building a replacement hospital to support the work of our incredible caregivers and foster a healthy community” said Lee Boyles, president of Intermountain St. Vincent Regional Hospital and the Montana and Wyoming market of Intermountain Health.

The new hospital is designed to address current patient needs while accommodating long-term population growth and future healthcare demands. It will feature 243 patient beds, with space for 16 additional beds when needed.

All rooms are universal and convertible to ICU-level care, allowing the hospital to respond to changing demands and future pandemics. Operating rooms are designed for adaptability, supporting the latest and future developments in robotic surgical technology, and will be fully integrated for efficient care.

The project is expected to have a substantial economic impact, with up to 700 workers on site at the peak of construction and 1,200 total workers involved. An additional 500 local jobs are anticipated to support the workforce and project, contributing to sustained economic growth in the region. Construction of the new facility is expected to be completed in 2029.
