It’s one thing to design a breathtaking building, it’s another to create one that looks like it belongs. For architecture and interior design studio The Middleton Group, a successful project achieves both.
“We pride ourselves on integrating designs within the historic context of the neighborhoods we’re working in,” says Blake Middleton, Assoc. AIA, principal. “It's important to not interrupt the flow of a city. We want to design beautiful projects that look like they’ve always belonged in a neighborhood, rather than design something that stands out for the wrong reasons.”
For each project, research helps inform design decisions that honor the history and authentic feel of a neighborhood. The goal is to pay homage to the past while designing buildings with modern detailing and materials built to last. For The Morris, a recently completed project in Charleston, this meant studying the historical context of the area and designing buildings that respect their urban industrial surroundings. Organized around a grand oak tree, the site and buildings were designed so that the project looks as if it has always been there.
“I love that this work is a combination of creativity and rules. There are constraints to what we do—building codes, zoning codes, flood zones—but we can be innovative within the technical requirements of building design,” says principal Laura Middleton, AIA, LEED AP.
Streamlined Design
Equally astute in architecture and interior design, The Middleton Group’s synergy of specialties creates a streamlined process for clients that carries a project from initial site investigation through furniture selection.
“Our interior designers work closely with our architects to create a cohesive product where every detail works towards a common goal. Everything can be done in-house,” says Laura.
The team’s architects and designers that collaborated on The Morris emphasized the neighborhood’s industrial past by incorporating large windows in a brick veneer and introducing modern materials like concrete, wood, metal, and glass throughout the interior.
“The structure of The Morris influenced the interior design,” says Laura. “We contrasted the coldness of the industrial concrete with the warmth of walnut wood tones in the ceiling, walls, and furniture. The space feels comfortable and high end, attracting tenants with a rich environment akin to a club lounge.”
Projects by The Middleton Group successfully integrate into the fabric of its unique settings and elevate the architectural integrity of these existing spaces.
