Huawei: MANO Evolution, Next-Generation NFV Management

Shenzhen, China – On 6th December, Layer123 World Congress 2022 was successfully held in London. Diego Yu, President of Huawei Cloud Core Network Strategy & Business Development Dept, delivered a keynote speech entitled MANO Evolution, Next-Generation NFV Management. He proposed the MANO Evolution concept, aiming to introduce new technology and resolve standardized interconnection based on MANO.

After a decade, the six goals defined in the NFV White Paper (2012) have been essentially met. However, MANO focuses on NE lifecycle management during the evolution to cloud native. Fragmented development of industry standards is desperately needed to be unified. Huawei called on industry partners to join hands to unify industry best practices that comply with international standards so as to cope with the challenges in managing massive ultra-distributed MEC sites and in interconnection with multiple vendors. MANO Evolution works with streamline breakpoints, deploys multi-cloud and open systems, and promotes the continuous development of the NFV industry within the standards.

During his speech, Diego earmarked six propositions of MANO Evolution.

Proposition 1: Standardized Multi-Cloud Architecture

MANO Evolution draws on the ETSI architecture and is compatible with ETSI MANO and mainstream open-source ecosystems. It provides multi-cloud adaptation for easy integration with cloudified and containerized bases from different vendors, paving a way for the flexible deployment of network and computing power in heterogeneous environments.

Proposition 2: Declarative Intent Driven

Traditional service orchestration requires manual design from information collection to resource deployment. Configuration of massive parameters adds additional workloads to O&M personnel, resulting in low O&M efficiency. Intent-based network design enables vendors to customize declarative APIs which involve only a few parameters, so that the migration design and interconnection can be completed within minutes.

Proposition 3: Smooth Evolution of Installed Base

As NEs of multiple types will coexist on the network for a long time, MANO Evolution, which is based on VNFM, is designed to be compatible with the original MANO interfaces to manage existing NEs. It also uses new interfaces to interconnect with new NEs. This ensures the seamless upgrading of existing MANO and telco cloud, while protecting operators’ investment and offering the users an optimal experience.

Proposition 4: E2E Full-Scenario O&M

Fault demarcation and resource optimization are unavailable on the current NFVO due to the lack of hardware and fault management capabilities. MANO Evolution will be able to manage faults, configurations, performance, and security, and it allows users to view and check distributed cloud resources including VMs, containers, and bare metal servers. Intelligent O&M is achieved through intelligent fault detection, demarcation, and self-healing. In addition, dynamic resource management and elastic scaling help operators save energy.

Proposition 5: Open and Standardized Automatic Interconnection

Conventional network change operations are complex, skill-demanding, and time-consuming. MANO Evolution can automate network upgrades and expansion, reducing operation risks and improving efficiency. Furthermore, MANO Evolution can interconnect with third parties via open interfaces to realize zero-touch network changes.

Proposition 6: Unified MEC Management

An orchestration layer is built for complex services and massive edge sites. It empowers a unified management of distributed clouds and operation of lightweight clouds, heralding a new era of cloud-network lifecycle automation along the future MEC networks.

The age of 5.5G and 6G is only going to intensify cloudification, edge computing, and network integration. Building a next-generation MANO that supports multi-cloud, heterogeneous deployment, unified central and edge clouds, unified ICT infrastructure, intent-driven design, and data-driven networks is the key to future network success. Huawei is committed to cooperate with operators, ICT solution providers, organizations, and partners to jointly innovate and build an open ecosystem for better NFV networks.
