Multi-National Retailer Selects DTEX InTERCEPT to Gain Visibility Into Insider Risk at Its Stores

Non-malicious USB Use for Scheduling Workarounds Exposes the Company to Insider Risk That Could Only Be Detected With Behavioral Context and Activity Intelligence

DTEX Systems, the Workforce Cyber Intelligence & Security Company™, today announced it has added a multi-national retailer to its client roster. The company will use DTEX InTERCEPT across 2,500 stores globally to detect malicious and non-malicious insider risk from employees using in-store devices in unauthorized ways.

The company selected DTEX after an employee’s use of a USB thumb drive infected back-office devices across several stores in the chain. Although the company’s security team was able to contain the incident, it highlighted the ineffectiveness of its Endpoint Detection Response solution. After deploying DTEX InTERCEPT, the company found that it was at risk because almost a third of all store employees used unauthorized USB flash drives multiple times a day as a workaround for scheduling or back-office work they needed to share with users on different shifts.

“In an effort to make their jobs easier, employees often find creative ways that simplify their daily tasks, but unfortunately increase risk for their organizations,” said Bahman Mahbod, CEO at DTEX Systems. “These employees aren't malicious but in a global workforce with a myriad of endpoints, malicious actors will exploit human-based vulnerabilities. Protecting a company from insider risk is absolutely critical. DTEX InTERCEPT delivers the context and intelligence that answers the Who, What, When, Where and How related to any potential insider threat situation and helped this company find vulnerabilities created by otherwise well-meaning employees.”

Through further investigation by the DTEX i3 team, the company found that employees created unauthorized Gmail and Yahoo accounts, using the company's branding for listings in local job postings. This created a risk because former employees could access the confidential data of applicants, and the retailer’s security team had no visibility into the activity on these accounts. By using DTEX InTERCEPT, the retailer has been able to identify insider threats, and regardless of whether they were malicious or non-malicious, reduce the risk to the organization.

DTEX InTERCEPT™ is a first-of-its-kind Workforce Cyber Security solution that brings together the capabilities of Insider Threat Management, User and Entity Behavior Analytics, Digital Forensics, and Zero Trust DLP in an all-in-one lightweight, cloud-native platform. Only DTEX InTERCEPT delivers the behavioral context and activity intelligence that answers the Who, What, When, Where, Why and How related to any potential insider threat situation, compromised account event or data loss scenario without invading personal privacy.
