In Connecticut, where the current policy requires 27 percent of energy must come from renewable energy by 2020, the state is being crippled by high energy prices. As more wind and solar are added to the grid, at a higher price per KW than coal, nuclear or natural gas, the state fears energy costs will rise even higher. Connecticut has the highest rates in the country - only behind Hawaii. On January 1, 2007, electricity rates increased 25% to 72%, in the Connecticut Light and Power and United Illuminating electricity service territories, resulting in higher costs for all commercial customers. They have gone up 6% per year since on average

So why consider Solar Energy?

During the daylight hours, energy created is used in your home and excess energy spins your meter backwards to save you money. Net Metering allows you to sell the unused power to the utility company for the same price as you pay for it. Older dial meters will actually spin backwards! It is something to see. You get retail price for your solar generated current. Ingenious.

Solar is easy to install and solar energy requires no costly maintenance. Most solar panels are warranted for 25 years and so your investment is safe and will deliver power for years to come that is pollution free and kind to Mother Earth. If one panel should fail or get damaged - it can easily and cost effectively replaced. They are covered by your homeowner’s policy.

The federal and state incentives are near the highest they have been in years. Some states cover up to 80 % of the cost of your solar system. Connecticut has always been a leader in this area.

The solar system can increase the value of your home as well. What would you rather purchase a home that makes its own electricity or one that has a huge electrical bill every month? It’s a very easy decision. And solar systems have no sales tax, and do not add to your homes property tax.

Add up all your electric bills, as many as you can locate - or go online and get a summary from your electric company. Odds are that it is in the tens of thousands of dollars just within the last few years. Hundreds of people install solar every year in CT.
