Android App Teaches and Protects Teenage Drivers

Vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for teens. Read how a new Smartphone app can help parents and teens work together to protect new drivers by providing unsafe driving alerts, reporting, and coaching opportunities.

In order to help prevent accidents among teenage drivers, iGuardian Teen is launching a safe driving app that will help teach and protect teenage drivers.

The app functions as a dash camera which also records multiple sources of data, including speed, GPS location, and distance traveled. The app will then alert parents by email if the app detects an accident, and also provides regular driving reports at the end of each driving session. A full list of features can be found on iGuardian Teen’s website http://www.iguardianteen.com.

The goal of the app is to reduce the risks for new and inexperienced teen drivers by helping parents and teens cooperate together on safe driving. The app assists parents with providing coaching, feedback and support to their teen driver during the first few months of driving solo, as well as provides notification in the event of an accident.

“There is an urgent need to teach and protect teenage drivers,” said Mark Loges, President of iGuardian Teen and who also has 10 years of experience working in the insurance industry. “Currently motor vehicle crashes are the top cause of death for teenagers, and account for a third of teenage deaths nationwide. We need to do more to teach and protect our teens, and apps like this can be a part of the solution.”

On average, there are more than 5000 teenage deaths per year due to vehicle accidents, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers, and with a fatality rate four times higher than that of adults.

The iGuardian Teen app is available for all devices running Android 2.1 or higher and can be purchased through the Android Market for $19.99. An iPhone version is expected later this year.

“There are many vehicle and driver monitoring services already on the market, but they all require hardware to be installed and cost hundreds of dollars,” said Loges. “This is the first app-only solution, and it provides more services and more versatility than hardware-only options, and costs less than a tank of gas.”
