Toy Poodle Recue’s Seniors for Seniors program places toy poodles 10+ years old with senior citizens, thus bringing purpose and happiness to the senior’s life. This month Old Dog Care Guide will donate to Toy Poodle Rescue a portion of every purchase made at OldDogLovers to help advance the needs of both senior dogs and senior citizens.
According to CSI Caregiver, “90% of seniors polled say they are less lonely and much happier since adopting an animal. The dogs can be of any age or breed, but most seniors like small, older dogs…those that won't be adopted by families with children.”
The toy poodle breed is the perfect breed for senior citizens. They are small, weighing between 5 – 10 pounds and standing 10inches tall or less, making them easy for seniors to hold. They can live very long lives and they have the perfect temperament to live with Senior Citizens.
ToyPoodleRescue has been placing toy poodles in foster homes and forever homes since 2008, but founder Sue Shemuga has been involved in Poodle rescue since 1990.
But with the downturn in the economy more and more senior dogs are being taken to shelters and most people don’t go to shelters to adopt old dogs. But senior dogs make a lot of sense for senior citizens. There’s little-to-no training required, they are calmer than when they were puppies and they don’t need attention around the clock but are more than happy to take it if and when you want to give it.
“We are delighted to have been selected as the May 2012 charity partner by Old Dog Care Guide,” said Sue Shemuga, founder of Toy Poodle Rescue. “We are an all-volunteer organization; no-one is paid for their dedication to these Poodles. All of our funding is via tax-deductible donations.”
Toy Poodle Rescue also makes sure the Poodles receive medical attention before they are adopted. “Prior to adoption all our Poodles are spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated, heartworm tested (if old enough), micro-chipped, dental cleanings if needed and have had all their veterinary needs met.”
OldDogCareGuide Editor, Andi Andersen, explains why Toy Poodle Rescue was selected to receive the donations. “Each month we select a different non-profit to help raise funds for. I was impressed with Toy Poodle Rescue’s focus on the seniors, because that’s what we focus on. Then I learned of their Guardian Angel program where they also raise money to help the senior citizens who adopt their Poodles pay for medical care even after the dogs are adopted. We think that, in and of itself, deserves a higher profile to help raise funding.”
