Station X Raises Additional $5M Led By Runa Capital To Help Crack The Genetic Code

Station X , which develops software for scientists and clinicians who work with large-scale human genome data, has announced that it's raised $5 million in a second funding round, led by Runa Capital. In what was effectively a follow-on, the startup's previous investors -- mostly notably, Genomic Health -- also participated. This new round also sees Runa Capital partner Andre Bliznyuk join the Station X Board of Directors. The additional funds will be used by Station X to expand its team and accelerate the commercialization of its flagship product, GenePool, a software-based "biomarker discovery system" for storing, analyzing and visualizing large-scale genomic data. In other words, this is heavy Life Sciences stuff, mixed with a bit of old-fashioned BIG data!

Station X, which develops software for scientists and clinicians who work with large-scale human genome data, has announced that it’s raised $5 million in a second funding round, led by Runa Capital. In what was effectively a follow-on, the startup’s previous investors — most notably, Genomic Health — also participated. This new round also sees Runa Capital partner Andre Bliznyuk join the Station X Board of Directors.

In the press release, Runa Capital’s focus on investing in Cloud computing is being talked up as a good fit for Station X, as it takes a lot of horsepower when “cracking the genetic code” (I’ve always wanted to type those four words).

“Cracking the genetic code requires a combination of computational power and smart people with diverse skills and backgrounds. We are excited to add Runa Capital’s expertise in cloud computing to our existing team of investors who are among the most experienced business developers in the life sciences industry,” says Dr. Goold, in a (nicely worded) canned statement.

Based in Silicon Valley, Station X was founded in 2010 by Richard D. Goold, Ph.D., Tod M. Klingler, Ph.D., and Andrew R. MacBride.

Meanwhile, it’s been a busy month for Runa Capital on the funding front. Just a few weeks ago, the Russian VC firm announced that it had invested $5 million into educational platform Dnevnik.ru to help it expand into the EU, China, Israel, and the U.S. and develop a system of cataloging and distributing educational content under its more recognisable brand of ClassedIn.
