Marjories Fund: The Type 1 Diabetes Global Initiative To Hold Launch Celebration in New York City on October 18

New Not-for-Profit Organization Empowers Type 1 Diabetes Patients in Developing World to Thrive Into Adulthood

Marjorie’s Fund: The Type 1 Diabetes Global Initiative, a new not-for-profit organization empowering people living with type 1 diabetes in the developing world to thrive into adulthood, will hold its launch celebration on Thursday, October 18 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Soho’s beautiful SICIS showroom, located at 470 Broome Street, New York, NY.

This launch event will feature an open bar, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction with exciting items and experiences, all thanks to generous sponsors. Ticket price tiers include Friend ($100), Supporter ($250), Sponsor ($500) and Benefactor ($1000+). Confirmed celebrities in attendance will include Sam Talbot from Bravo’s Top Chef, Ronald “Ronnie” Ortiz-Magro, Jr. and Samantha Rae “Sammi” Giancola from MTV’s Jersey Shore.

Jason C. Baker, M.D., founder and chair of the board of directors of Marjorie’s Fund, said, “As an endocrinologist and a patient with type 1 diabetes myself, I am intimately familiar with the challenges of managing this chronic and unnecessarily debilitating disease. In the developing world, a gross lack of treatment resources means that type 1 diabetes is a virtual death sentence.”

Dr. Baker continued, “Our vision is that patients in countries such as India, Uganda, Rwanda and Ethiopia will receive the same standard of care that people like me receive here in resource-rich America. Together, we can save countless lives and ensure that people with type 1 diabetes not only survive but thrive with this manageable disease. Without better resources, more patients like Marjorie, whom I met in 2010, will survive into adulthood only to suffer and inevitably die from the many complications associated with late diagnosis and poor diabetes control.”

The Fund’s namesake, a resident of Uganda, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age three and died at age 29, having succumbed to kidney-related failure. Uganda is starved for resources that would have allowed Marjorie to keep her blood sugar levels under good enough control to avoid diabetic complications.

Fred Pescatore, M.D., author of The Hamptons Diet and a member of the Marjorie’s Fund host committee, said, “Marjorie’s Fund represents the ideal NGO-a fund started by one person, because of an individual person-which can now change thousands of lives.”
