SafeToTalk Organization Collects Shoes to Fund Anonymous Student Tiplines to Help End Bullying at Utah Schools.
PR Log - Mar 25, 2013 - An anti-bullying campaign in the Salt Lake City School District has begun to “Boot Out Bullying” by collecting and recycling unwanted shoes in an effort to raise funds for anonymous student tiplines in local schools. Anonymous tiplines offer students a safe way to inform school officials of dangerous or inappropriate behavior seen on campus. The Boot Out Bullying campaign runs through March 29, 2013. Shoes collected will be recycled and all funds will be used to help keep Salt Lake City schools safer.
As an incentive for schools to participate in the program, the school district has presented a contest to its schools. The school that collects the most shoes will be rewarded with an assembly hosted by nationally renowned entertainer, Jason Hewlett. Additionally, each school within the district will hold a competition among individual classes to collect the most shoes for a pizza party.
Along with student participation, the campaign relies on the community to donate shoes to schools and at designated Mountain America Credit Union branches in Utah, Salt Lake, and Davis Counties. Shoes will then be taken to a local recycler with the proceeds donated to SafeToTalk, which will provide tiplines for Salt Lake City schools. The school district hopes the tiplines will help put a stop to bullying and school violence issues.
Mountain America Credit Union is supporting the Boot Out Bullying campaign during these two weeks by housing donation boxes in its local branches. Members of the community are encouraged to donate unwanted shoes at any of the branch locations.
“Mountain America is pleased to support this anti-bullying campaign,” said Marshall Paepke, executive vice president and chief administrative officer for Mountain America Credit Union. “Helping to educate about the destructive effects of bullying along with providing needed help to victims and families is a terrific cause for our community. As individuals participate, their combined efforts will truly make a difference to those who need it.”
According to the National Education Association, 160,000 students skip classes each day because they fear physical harm. The Salt Lake City School District and SafeToTalk Organization have teamed up to implement a student tipline service in every school, giving students a way to report dangerous situations and behaviors affecting them and their fellow students. These anonymous tiplines bridge the gap between students and faculty members on school campuses, allowing for more effective communication. This tipline service is serving as a prominent anti-bullying technique in thousands of schools around the country.
Parents and students are encouraged to visit the SchoolTipline website to locate a school and receive information on how to submit a tip.
