Alibaba expands into smartphones, investing $590 million in Xiaomi rival

The Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba is expanding into the smartphone business with a $590 million investment in smartphone start-up Meizu Technology, a long-time rival of Xiaomi, the country’s biggest smartphone maker.
