(DGIwire) – Telecommuting has quickly become the hot new trend in business. In the age of email and social media, working from home has never been easier, and for some jobs it renders working in an office obsolete. Many big companies actually encourage their employees to work from home for this reason. While we should not belittle the benefits of working in an office— fostering in-person connections with co-workers and keeping motivated in a more formal environment—some people simply work better as self-starters. Quartz, a creative online news outlet, outlines the top four factors that will ease the transition to working from home:
- Seeing more of your loved ones (but not too much). Having children is one big reason to work from home, and some family-friendly policies are designed to allow employees to weave together work and home life. A 2010 study by Stanford Strategic Management found these kinds of policies make families happier while also making firms more successful.
- Controlling your environment. For anyone who has worked in an overheated, noisy or windowless office, being in control of a personal workspace brings an added relief. The window can be opened for some fresh air without asking co-workers first, and you can even show up to work wearing your most comfortable clothes. In a 2014 Stanford study of China’s largest travel agency, Ctrip, home workers made four percent more work-related calls than their office counterparts, which the study’s authors attributed to a quieter and more convenient working environment.
- Set boundaries. Without spending time traveling to an office, you have more time for yourself. Instead of skipping breakfast to make your train, you can ease into your workday with a clear head. Of course, some people may wake up and begin emailing from their beds right away, which actually could contribute to stress. It is important to impose boundaries, such as not working in your bedroom or in front of the TV when working from home.
- Discipline. Without the oversight of a watchful manager, it can be difficult for some to keep up the momentum. A quiet room at home, free from distractions, can be a better place to concentrate than a busy office, but only if you are truly self-disciplined. Know yourself—if you are self-motivated, working from home might be your best bet.
