Evolve IP Survey of 1,000+ IT Professionals And Executives Concludes Adoption is Growing; Mobility and BYOD Programs Driving Adoption and Executives Lack Knowledge of Virtual Desktop Technologies and Benefits
PRLog - March 17, 2015 - WAYNE, Pa. -- About one in three organizations report they will implement some level of virtualized desktops in the next three years according to a technology survey conducted by Evolve IP. The report also shows clear differences between the server room and the boardroom finding executives lack a full understanding of the new technologies and the time and energy spent by IT professionals managing desktops. An Emerging Technology
Key results of the survey show that today about one in three respondents (36.5 percent) indicate that their organization had implemented or tested some level of virtual desktops. Another third (32.5 percent) plan on doing so in the next three years. However, the overwhelming majority of these organizations are not going “all in”, rather they are selectively testing with pilot programs or by deploying virtual desktops among specific users types.
The survey indicated that those using the technology are very pleased with their virtual desktops with 97.5 percent indicating they are satisfied with the solution. Moreover, barriers to entry for virtual desktops appear to be low:
· 83.5 percent believe that their users will be comfortable with the technology
· 89.5 percent trust the technology
· 92.5 percent prefer an OPEX model for desktops over CAPEX, reducing an overall cost barrier.
“We are seeing serious interest in deploying virtual desktops not only with early adopters, but with well-established more conservative organizations,” says Tim Allen, Chief Sales Officer of Evolve IP. “The demand for a virtual desktop that is accessible 24/7, from any location, on almost any internet-enabled device is increasing due to greater workforce mobility and the support for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiatives.
Allen continued, “We expect adoption to increase as executives gain better understanding of the financial and operational costs associated with refreshing their desktops and as they learn about how these technologies will improve their organization’s productivity and efficiency.”
Additional Findings:
· VPN access, cited by 65.5 percent of respondents, is the number one way organizations currently enable mobility today.
· Six in 10 respondents noted that their staff used virtual desktops to work remotely during outages or severe weather conditions.
· Nine in 10 organizations refresh their employees’ computers every 5 years with 40 percent doing so every 2-3 years.
· IT staffs of organizations using traditional desktops spend significantly more time handing desktop issues. 11.5 percent noted that it takes up 50 percent or more of their time compared to none of those using virtual desktops.
· Onsite / hands-on desktop management is performed by over half (53.5 percent) of respondents. Just 22 percent indicated they are using Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM).
Additional Findings: Server Room Vs. The Boardroom
· Executives appear uninformed about desktop technologies. Nearly 4 in 10 (39 percent) were unaware of the term Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS), 35.5 percent had not heard of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and 23.5 percent did not know about RMM.
· While 43 percent of IT professionals plan on implementing virtual desktops in the next three years, just 28 percent of executives noted the same.
· While both executive and IT respondents agreed that mobility is a benefit of virtual desktops, 64.5 percent of executives cited this as the number one benefit. On the other hand, 63.5 percent of IT pros noted that time savings and efficiency was the number one benefit of the service.
· Time spent on desktop issues was also a point of dissension. Just 20.5 percent of IT pros claim to spend 10 percent or less of their time on desktop issues. Executives believe that number to be closer to 40 percent of IT professionals.
· Financially, 10.5 percent of executives believe their company spends more than $200,000 on desktop hardware and software while 26.5 percent of IT pros report spending that amount or more.
Survey Methodology
Evolve IP conducted a blind, web-based survey during January 2015 with 1,031 IT professionals and executives. Fifty-five percent were from organizations with between 100 – 2,000 employees; 22 percent were from organizations with between 11 – 99 employees; 17 percent came from organizations with more than 2,000 employees and 6 percent were from organizations with between 1 – 10 employees.
