Project organizers seek minority- and women-owned subcontractors
PRLog - June 8, 2015 - LOS ANGELES -- Webcor/Obayashi/Lyles (WOL-JV), a joint venture managing Phase II of the Silver Lake Reservoir Complex Storage Replacement Project will host two open house events for prospective subcontractors June 9 and 16.
As part of the Silver Lake project, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) will build a new reservoir storage facility at the Headworks spreading grounds, a 43-acre site adjacent to the Los Angeles River and between the city of Burbank and Griffith Park. Phase II of the project is estimated to cost $110 million.
WOL-JV Project Director Dan Rakers said that the open house events are designed to encourage second and lower tier subcontractor and vendor collaboration and that opportunities will be available for certified and non-certified firms of all sizes and trades. WOL-JV is working closely with local community-based organizations to generate participation from minority (MBE) and women-owned businesses (WBE).
Attendees will meet WOL-JV project managers and learn about the upcoming opportunities. Seating will be according to trade categories, and participants will have a chance to ask questions and network.
Lindy Alaska, president of a Tier 2 supplier for the project, said, “Alaska Enterprises was pleased to be one of the selected subcontractors for Phase I. We have successfully delivered materials, equipment, and supply services for the past two years. We are looking forward to working on Phase II.”
J.R. Minor of Andersen Environmental said, “The experience the WOL-JV staff brought to the project helped to streamline the delivery process. It was our pleasure to work with them on Phase I of the Silver Lake Reservoir Complex Replacement Project.”
Plans for the project were initiated because of a January 2006 ruling of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. That ruling prompted LADWP to remove some open reservoirs from service, because they were open to the environment and subject to contamination. To comply with the new regulations, reservoirs must either be covered, have their water treated prior to use, or be bypassed.
Compliance with the regulations meant removal of the Silver Lake and Ivanhoe reservoirs. To replace them, two underground reservoirs and a large-diameter pipeline will be constructed at the Headworks property. The replacement storage facilities, the Headworks East Reservoir and the Headworks West Reservoir, will be built below grade.
A four-megawatt hydroelectric plant will also be built on the site. After the projects are completed, the ecosystem will be developed to establish environmentally friendly habitats and recreational facilities for use by the surrounding communities.
