BloodThinnerHelp.com reports that a new study has been released raising concerns that the active drug Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) crosses the placental barrier to the fetus in pregnant women who take the blood thinner.
"While the study did not look at the dangers of Xarelto permeating the placental barrier, it did call for such a study to be carried out given the statistically significant findings that the drug in fact does enter the fetus," commented Marc Goldich from BloodThinnerHelp.com.
This study was presented at the annual scientific meeting of the Canadian Society of Pharmacology and Therapeutics in Winnipeg, MB, Canada in June 2014. To read the study, click here.
Xarelto: Side Effects & Concerns About The Blood Thinner
Xarelto is a new blood thinner that is marketed as a one pill a day solution without frequent blood monitoring or major dietary changes. As a result, this drug has been extremely popular because of its convenience. However, as we have seen with a flurry of reported adverse events, and filed lawsuits, the drug's convenience may come at a cost.
The drug has been in the spotlight because of the side effects which allegedly cause hospitalization, serious injury, and even death. Over 500 lawsuits have been filed around the U.S. alleging that Xarelto caused uncontrollable bleeding which could have been avoided had the manufacturers adequately warned about the risks of taking the drug.
Xarelto’s warning label contains a note stating that patients who are pregnant should use the blood thinner with caution because of the potential of a hemorrhage or delivery with an anticoagulant that is not reversible. In addition, the Food & Drug Administration has classified Xarelto as a category C drug. This means that animal studies have evidenced adverse effects on the fetus. While there have been no human studies performed as to the safety of Xarelto and how it affects the fetus, this latest study gives rise to great concern given we now know that the drug readily passes into the fetus and back to the mother.
