London, UK – Starting August 18, 2015, Qatar has implemented a new Wage Protection System for all employees. In keeping with their mission to educate travellers on the VISA process, VisaCompare (www.visacompare.com) has just published a new blog post entitled 'Qatar Wages System'.
The article discusses how the Wage Protection System legislation is for the protection of workers ensuring they receive their wages, whether weekly or monthly, in a bank account in Qatar. This covers all employees, not just workers on annual or monthly employment arrangements. International companies will also be required to comply with this legislation which carries, according to the Labour Department 'a sentence of not more than one month in prison and a fine of not less than QR2,000 (USD 549) and not more than QR6,000 (USD1,647)'.
According to the article, 'This electronic system sees to it that payments to employees are made promptly, at prescribed intervals, with the Qatari riyal, and through Qatari banks. By the end of September 2015, Qatari employers who have not yet registered for the Wages Protection System with a Qatari bank may be penalized'. The article continues noting that 'the Ministry of Labor will regularly inspect employers’ practices to assure compliance'.
According to the government website, 'an extensive database of all workers as part of the WPS has been prepared by the Ministry in cooperation with Qatar Central Bank and the Ministry of Interior'. This will result in employers having to 'make CSV files to save data in a table-structured format with workers’ names and salaries referenced serially. A separate inspection unit to monitor compliance with the WPS has been set up by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs'.
