Healthy meadows are vital for wildlife populations to thrive. Approximately two-thirds of California's birds and amphibians depend upon meadows. During the summer months, meadows are considered the single most important habitat for Sierran wildlife.
However, road-building, overuse of habitat, development and catastrophic wildfire have resulted in the widespread deterioration of the majority of the 10,000 meadows in the Sierra Nevada.
In 2011, Nature Corps volunteers supported one of the largest meadow restoration projects in Sequoia's history. With the help of the general public and employees from Pacific Gas & Electric, Chevron, and Warner Bros., volunteers laid acres of erosion control blankets and planted thousands of grasses in a major effort to restore Halstead Meadow, one of Sequoia's larger meadows.
These efforts produced almost immediate results; water levels rose, streams recharged, and mountain meadow habitat burst with new life. The benefits to wildlife are clear: wildlife readily colonize restored sites, and population increases can be observed in a very short period of time.
Nature Corps looks forward to offering voluntours that play a vital role in this important campaign to enhance Yosemite's meadows.
To celebrate Yosemite's stunning display of glacial domes and wildflowers, volunteers will also enjoy a variety of organized nature and photo walks to capture some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. Volunteers are encouraged to invite friends, family, and fellow employees to join them on what will be a truly memorable and rewarding weekend.
Nature Corps is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit volunteer conservation organization established in 1987. It has received a number of national and state awards for its conservation efforts, including a Congressional "Take Pride" award for planting 20,000 trees throughout Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.
The organization offers a variety of youth programs and voluntours in Yosemite, Sequoia, Big Sur, and Morro Bay State Park. Nature Corps also provides companies with all-inclusive employee volunteer opportunities and teambuilding outings. Proceeds from company sponsorships and the voluntours are used to support low-income youth that wish to volunteer in the parks. All contributions a tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
