Now in its tenth year, ISFLC17 represents the unity of the libertarian student movement and will bring together old friends and new faces for a weekend of learning and activism. Haidt is an engaging figure for young people interested in the ideas of liberty. He played a key role in establishing and promoting Heterodox Academy: a politically diverse group of academics from various disciplines who are concerned with a lack of viewpoint diversity in American higher education. He also co-authored a highly-praised 2015 article for The Atlantic, titled "The Coddling of the American Mind." The article argues that protecting college students from words and ideas they don't like (in the name of emotional wellbeing) is disastrous for both their education and mental health.
Now working as a social psychologist at the NYU-Stern School of Business, Haidt received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992 and spent most of his career (1995-2011) at the University of Virginia.
Haidt's research examines the intuitive foundations of morality and how morality varies across cultures – including the sub-cultures of American progressives, conservatives, and libertarians. Haidt is the author of The Happiness Hypothesis and of The New York Times bestseller The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion.
Students For Liberty looks forward to welcoming Haidt in February and to announcing many more high-profile speakers in the coming months.
