DENVER - Oct. 3, 2017 - PRLog -- Starting this week, low-income Coloradans who can't afford to heat and light their homes can apply for $7.7 million in local energy assistance funding being distributed over the next 12 months by Energy Outreach Colorado.
One in four Colorado households can't afford to pay their home energy bills without skimping on other basic necessities like food or prescriptions. Energy Outreach Colorado provides emergency energy bill payment assistance through a statewide network of community assistance organizations such as senior support agencies, social services offices, veteran-support groups and faith-based organizations.
"Federally-funded programs to support the health and well-being of Americans struggling to make ends meet are increasingly at risk, so local, private nonprofits like Energy Outreach are more important than ever to support our most vulnerable neighbors and communities," said Skip Arnold, executive director at Energy Outreach Colorado.
Since its inception in 1989, EOC has raised funds through individual and organizational donors for its affordable home energy programs. Each year EOC distributes funding to selected agencies across the state, which accept energy assistance applications, determine eligibility and approve direct payments to local utility or fuel companies to cover struggling households' overdue bills. Last year, EOC invested $5.8 million to help pay the overdue home energy bills of about 16,000 Coloradans.
