Column: Tax ruling changes the game for online retailers

Before June 21, an online retail seller could not be required to collect and remit state sales tax if it did not have a physical presence in a state. Shipping items to customers would not trigger the physical presence rule. However, the Supreme Court’s June 21 decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair Inc., et al. changes the game and will have wide-ranging impacts on online retailers.
