Beijing seeks broader control: 'The stick is getting bigger, but the carrots are getting sweeter'

China is allowing people from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan new residence permits similar to those for mainland citizens. But the country issued a vague warning that the privileges could be revoked on national security grounds.
