The AFCON 2019 Should Be Given Back to Cameroon Soccer

By: Get News

All over the world, elicits lots of passion, emotion and razzmatazz and the reason is not farfetched looking at what someone said, “soccer is a simple game with twenty-two men chasing a round object and in the end one team wins.” In Africa, especially sub-Saharan Africa, football remains a dominant sport but over the years this sport left much to be desired in terms of talent discovery and all-round development.

Many commentators and analysts alike attribute the ills of this sport in the continent to the direction of its administration which is where the Confederation of African Football (CAF) comes to the picture. Perhaps the problem of CAF’s leadership over the recent years is a direct effect of the overall leadership and administrative problems that have bedeviled Africa in its entirety.

However, one would have hoped that the new trend which greeted CAF’s leadership will witness a sharp renaissance. Unfortunately, the new leadership of CAF gives a very bad pictures of African management all over the world. Until the beginning of December 2018, Cameroon was the official hosting country of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON). Many official visits were made in Yaounde and Douala, and everyone in the Committee approved the organization, from the sponsors (Lagardère) to the security advisors.

But Ahmad Ahmad decided to change the plans, less than 7 months before the competition. Reactions in chains: Morocco who had campaigned to obtain the CAN 2019 withdraws from the competition and refuses to organize it. No serious candidate is vying to take over the load removed from Cameroon. Moreover, Ahmad Ahmad promised to the President of Cameroon, the organization of the AFCON in 2021… But it had already been given to Ivory Coast.

That prompted a furious response from the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) which has carried out its threat and has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. But Ahmad now insists “no decision” has yet been taken. “We are waiting first for the host for 2019 and then we will see.” Results: we still have no organizer for 2019 and 2021 main African sport event.

For its part, Cameroon is ready to organize the AFCON 2019. Stadium will all be ready, new highways are soon to be finished, and all the organization of the event is ready.

It is still time for the CAF to give back to Cameroon what it own: the AFCON 2019!
