Wikilection presents an innovative solution to fake news and political spin

Wikilection is the web app that will help keep politicians accountable for their actions, promises, and results. By making the full history for each politician available to everyone, and backing up each claim with the proof available, it will help voters by cutting through the political spin and biased information surrounding elections. This will cover all levels of government - from local politicians like mayors and city council, all the way up to the leaders of the country.

Voters often face a difficult task in choosing who to vote for. Wikilection will make this a bit easier by providing information on things like where their campaign financing comes from, how they voted while in office, and how likely they are to follow through on campaign promises. The history for each politician will also be used to summarize where they stand on topics important to voters - things like job creation, the environment, LGBT+ rights, and religious freedoms. The history for each candidate can then be filtered based on what is important to each voter.

Journalists will play an important role in this process. With the emphasis on proof needed to backup the history for each politician, the articles and photos provided by the media will be a vital component, along with the fact-checking that accompanies such information. Combined with additional proof like videos and images from the citizens themselves, Wikilection will ensure voters can trust this information through rigorous verification, along with technologies to spot altered images and videos.

This web app will be made of two main components. The first part, the wiki, provides the space to enter the information mentioned above. It will provide a quick summary of each politician, but will also contain large collections of proof used to backup these claims - information that voters can see for themselves on any topic they feel like researching further.

The second part of the solution is an election tool that will list the candidates competing for each role, and allow voters to compare them based on the information in the wiki. Voters within an election will be able to vote on the importance of each topic, and provide details about where each candidate stands on those issues.

If an election topic becomes popular enough, the candidates may join the conversation themselves, directly answering the questions of their audience. This will foster transparency between the candidates and the voters, and limit the ability of candidates to answers these questions differently based on what a particular audience may want to hear.

Wikilection is currently holding their first crowdfunding campaign on the popular platform Kickstarter, hoping to raise at least $50,000 CAD. More crowdfunding campaigns are expected, and the first uses of funding include improving the content available to explain the platform and promoting future campaigns. The backers supporting this project will receive  the following rewards:

  • Member profile badge  These badges will appear on the backer’s Wikilection member profile, showing their early involvement in - and support for - Wikilection.

  • Community involvement – The backer will receive regular updates on the project, and they can participate in the development through surveys and polls.

  • Live feedback sessions – Live feedback sessions will be held to have direct communication with the community. While many of these sessions will be open to the entire community, others will be set up for specific reward tiers.

The project also invites Journalists, Political Science Experts, Elected Officials, and Cybersecurity Experts to be a part of the Expert Panels for Wikilection. More information about the project can be found on Kickstarter.

Please note: While this project is based in Canada, and will initially focus on elections in Canada and the United States, this project is intended to be used worldwide.
