The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act changed 529 accounts so they can be tapped not just for college costs but for K-12 private school tuition, as well. That means withdrawals for either purposes are exempt from federal taxes. Yet states have adopted different policies around whether or not their benefits apply to the new category.
