In the last week, eight people were accused of defrauding the California workers' compensation system. Utilizing what is referred to as “sham clinics,” they were able to prescribe expensive medications and then take the money. Their patients never received the medications. Those indicted made more than $123 million through this process.

The defendants controlled the pharmacies a majority of the medications were made in. No matter the condition of a patient, the defendants were alleged to have prescribed the same high-priced medications over and over. Over the course of multiple years, the defendants are alleged to have done this to thousands of their patients.
