The Fort Lauderdale Memorial Junior Sharks wheelchair basketball team becomes officially sanctioned by the NWBA and competes in their first national tournament.

Davie, United States - March 12, 2019 /PressCable/

The Memorial Jr. Sharks wheelchair basketball team located in Fort Lauderdale became the first ever prep team in the state of Florida to become sanctioned by the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. This achievement allowed the Sharks to travel and compete in their first national tournaments in 2019.

All of this would never have been made possible without tremendous donations. The City of Fort Lauderdale donated two basketball wheelchairs to the team, with The Memorial Fund through Joe DiMaggio s hospital donating another three and then with National Seating and Mobility donating a further two basketball wheelchairs.

Through a successful GoFundMe campaign the Sharks were able to raise the necessary funds to enjoy traveling to the Big Peach Slam Jam and the SEC Championships for their first time competing as a team.

The Sharks placed 5th in both tournaments winning four out of the nine games they played. Melisa Chang, owner of Dynamic Orthopedics and Founder of the Junior Sharks had this to say about the competitions, These tournaments were our team s first ever time playing real games against kids of a similar age. We are extremely proud of how all our players performed and are now striving to get even better! One of our long term goals is to be able to host a national tournament right here in Florida.

The national standings for the NWBA can be found here https://www.nwba.org/standings/show/4478274?subseason=527217 , Melisa had this to say as well, We couldn t be more proud of how our players handled competition for the first time, for us to already be climbing up the standings after our first taste of competing says so much about our players and coaches that dedicate so much time to make this a reality. I am super excited to be a part of something bigger than I am, I hope to allow stepping stones for these kids to grow both as athletes and also as people that can also become greater in their individual lives for participating in this sport.
