DESIGN CHALLENGE IN LAKESIDE UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASSROOMS CREATES COMPETITION FOR THE BEST 21ST CENTURY LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Lakeside Union School District teachers and students got their creative juices flowing during a Classroom Design Challenge the district held. For the challenge, teachers and students collaborated on a design in the Fall of 2018 for a student-centered classroom based on the needs of a 21st Century learning environment. Pitches for each design were then presented in November of 2018 to a panel consisting of select members of the LUSD School Board and District Administration

Classrooms from Transitional Kindergarten up to 8th grade submitted a design and based their plans on helping students focus on the disposition defined in Lakeside Union School District’s Student Profile. The Student Profile includes traits that LUSD is committed to fostering in each student like collaborating constructively, thinking critically, learning continuously, communicating effectively, caring deeply, and persevering relentlessly.

The Classroom Design Challenge contest winners were announced in December 2018. The winners are:

  • Wintergardens, Anne Mulholland

  • Eucalyptus Hills, Emily Okerlund

  • Tierra del Sol, Dahlia Rinck

  • Lakeside Farms, Jessica Ehlers

  • Lakeside Middle School, Brian Mendoza

The Classroom Design Challenge was an innovative way for Lakeside Union School District to gather input from teachers regarding what a 21st Century, student-centered learning space should look like, as well as a way for students to learn about design, project management, and presentation literacy. The five winning classrooms will provide model spaces to inform future designs for LUSD classrooms district-wide as implementation of the designs will go into effect in the Spring of 2019.
