Former TOS President to Speak at New Obesity Clinical Immersion Program

SILVER SPRING, Md., March 28, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Immediate Past President of The Obesity Society Caroline Apovian, MD, FACP, FTOS, DABOM, will serve as one of several featured speakers at the first-ever Obesity Clinical Immersion Program. The event will take place May 13–17, 2019, in Boston, Mass., at Boston Medical Center and will be led by nationally-recognized faculty in the Nutrition and Weight Management Center.

Program participants will attend numerous sessions on a variety of topics such as dietary, exercise and pharmacologic approaches for patients with obesity to weight bias and stigma to how obesity has changed the practice of medicine. Other topics will include billing and coding for obesity medicine and practice management. Participants will also see patients under the supervision of obesity medicine specialists.

"We hope to give participants the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to implement new practices in their own clinics," Apovian said of the purpose behind the novel program. Apovian is the director of the Nutrition and Weight Management Center. She is also a professor of medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine.

Apovian added that the immersion program will focus on intensive interaction between participants and educators working toward immediate practice change. The content of the proposed curriculum will be based on the latest needs assessment data and expert clinical experience regarding best practices in the management of patients with obesity.

Organizers are seeking participants for the program. The target audience includes physicians, hospital administrators, primary care physicians, internists, pediatricians, gastroenterologists and other sub-specialists interested in obesity medicine clinical practice.

Other featured speakers will include Ivania Rizo, MD and Gitanjali Srivastava, MD. Rizo and Srivastava are both attending physicians at the Nutrition and Weight Management Center. Both doctors also work as assistant professors at Boston University School of Medicine.

Dong Wook Kim, MD, an attending physician, and Kenya Palmer, FNP, a nurse practitioner at the Nutrition and Weight Management Center will also speak during the program. Kim is an assistant professor of medicine while Palmer is an instructor in medicine at Boston University School of Medicine.

The program is provided in part by an educational grant from Novo Nordisk, Inc., a global healthcare company that develops medications for diabetes care and helps combat other chronic diseases such as obesity.
