The Chula Vista Elementary School District has a history of excellence in music education and was honored last year with a 2018 Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for outstanding commitment to music education. Make that two years in a row!

The NAMM Foundation recently announced that CVESD is among its 2019 honorees--and one of the few repeat winners. NAMM Foundation a is a nonprofit supported by more than 10,000 global National Association of Music Merchants members. The foundation promotes active participation in music programs in schools and beyond by supporting scientific research, philanthropic giving, and public service programs.

The Best Communities for Music Education honor is bestowed upon districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in providing music access and education to all students. CVESD Superintendent Francisco Escobedo said, “This award further validates our collective efforts to strengthen and enhance the arts as part of our broader goal to develop the ‘whole’ child. There is ample evidence to support the connection between academic success and the arts. This is a tremendous honor that has been years in the making, involving numerous arts organizations, students, and families. We couldn’t be prouder.”

Chula Vista Elementary School District has been partnered with organizations like the San Diego Youth Symphony, the VH1 Save the Music Foundation, and Grammy Award-winning band Switchfoot, among others, to ensure that the district’s Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) is top-notch. More than 20 CVESD schools have a VH1 Save the Music Foundation instrument grant. Montgomery Elementary was selected to be part of a national network of campuses that use the arts to strategically support student learning and school improvement efforts.

Grammy Award-winning band Switchfoot is among CVESD's VAPA supporters.

Researchers at Northwestern University have discovered that early exposure to music education improves how the brain processes and assimilates sounds. Many other studies have shown the connection between musical education and social skill benefits for the children involved, among many other benefits. Because of these widespread benefits, CVESD makes important planning and funding decisions to ensure their students have access to amazing VAPA programs. “When you make the arts a priority, you help transform the entire community,” Dr. Escobedo said of CVESD’s award-winning programs.
