London, Jun 25, 2019 (Issuewire.com) - Situated in the heart of Genk, The Krook is an impressive new build development was a large scale urban regeneration project that now houses a library, laboratories, and offices for Gent University. Part of the regeneration involved specifying AMG's frameless glass balustrades throughout the building.
Designed by the Ghent bureau Coussée & Goris in collaboration with RCR Arquitectes, the Waalse Krook building is a bold, modern construction that elegantly combines durable materials - glass, steel, and cement.
AMG's frameless glass balustrade solution was selected by the developers and used in internal and external areas of the building. The all-glass, frameless design complemented the modern aesthetics and open-plan functionality of the building. Approximately 800m of glass balustrading was installed throughout the construction of the Waalse Krook project.
Stainless steel glass balustrades
The glass balustrades feature custom anchors and profiles, which were designed for the Waalse Krook project.
Sections of the glass railings feature stainless steel handrails, particularly around staircases. These handrails were manufactured from grade 316 stainless steel and finished in brushed K320. The stainless steel offered superior corrosion, impact, and fire/heat resistance. In fact, AMG produced certain sections of the internal balustrading with greater levels of fire resistance.
The stainless steel also benefits from excellent hygienic properties, which is an important factor as they are located in public areas of the library. The Krook receives more than 7000 visitors on a daily basis!
A final benefit of the 316 stainless steel is the modern, tidy aesthetics they provide to the glass balustrades.
Frameless glass balustrades in The Krook
The glass balustrades installed in the Krook project feature 25.52mm toughened laminated extra clear glass. The glass that features in the external balustrading has a special coating which not only provides extra protection from dirt but also offers protection from aggressive load bearings.
The AMG frameless glass railing system significantly increases levels of natural light throughout internal areas of the Krook building. The all-glass appearance means greater levels of light can pass through internal rooms.
The AMG Frameless Glass System complies with various regulations across Europe, including NederlandsBouwbesluit 2012, French CSTB of the Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment, German AbP: 'AllgemeinesbauaufsichtlichesPrüfzeugnis' (AbP is a German abbreviation for "General Building Codes Test Certificate"). AMG is currently testing the system according to UK Building Regulations, in close collaboration with its sole distributor Balustrade Components UK.
